Seek Discomfort
This last one is uniquely important to me because it aligns with my motto in life, and person quote: “We must invite mistakes and hardships, for they present the most opportune situations to better ourselves and everyone encountered along the way.” Yeah yeah it’s not groundbreaking, but it means a heck of a lot to me because it’s allowed me to live my best, most fulfilling life.
What If I Had Never Been Bold Enough To?:
- 1. Consider escaping my small town to move to New York for Uni (shout out to my sister, Margaret, for planting that idea)
- 2. Study abroad
- 3. Reach out to a Food Network employee for coffee (thank you, Kristine!)
- 4. Raise my hand to present my pitch deck to a room full of executives, including a client, for the first time
- 5. Dream about a life in London
- 6. Quit my job to move to England to earn my MBA
- 7. Ask my now fiancé out on our first date
Your Task:

- I challenge you to sit down with a smooth pen and paper and write down the decisions you’ve executed that made you feel very uncomfortable. They can be TINY. I just included some of my major ones above, but some days this can be as small as, “called someone at work to discuss a topic instead of emailing,” or “completed an intimidating workout (or any workout at all!).”
- Next, document how these actions made you feel before, during, and after. Seriously! I realised I consider these feelings instinctively, and it not only empowers me afterwards, but also educates my actions moving forward. I think to myself:
- Why was I so nervous?
- Was it irrational, or warranted?
- How did I calm myself down and convince myself to make the uncomfortable decision?
- How did I feel afterward? Hint: Normally the answer is “um amazing, you go girl!”
- Was it worth the discomfort? Spoiler: Most likely, “hell yes!”
- Next, think about how you’d feel if you hadn’t made those decisions. Typically, I feel like I let myself down and could have done more. It’s a bit of a heavy feeling, as opposed to the lightness I carry when I prove to myself I could be brave. However, we’re not perfect and need to be able to accept and love ourselves while learning from these moments.
It is so easy to only seek comfort in life, and trust me, I am guilty of that 9 times out of 10. Life is hard, and sometimes we just need to be happy making it through the day. However, if we want to change and improve as individuals, we need to take the leap.
So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to be bold!
You got this,
Bea
